The Benefits of Medicated Dog Baths & Flea Dips

As the summer moves on and the temperatures rise, so do the number of bugs and pesky annoyances causing bites and itchy skin. It is important to remember, however, that during these hot summer months, your pets experience the same increase in skin irritation as you. Dogs that don’t have preventative collars or medication and live outside much of the day can often experience much discomfort if not treated. Our Southlake TX animal clinic can assist you with these essential summertime animal services, as well as many other pet grooming necessities.

Why They Are Important
If your dog is itching, a regular or medicated bath from a veterinarian will have beneficial results and might be all your dog needs on a regular basis. The bath can clean off unwanted debris like excess skin and oils, flea eggs and dirt. In special situations, where a pet has been sprayed by a skunk or has overly dry, infected skin, special medicated shampoos are oftentimes available for you to help bathe away the smell or provide moisture. With a flea dip service for your pet, you can be guaranteed a cleaner, healthier pet.

What is a Flea Dip?
A flea dip from your veterinarian is a great launching point on the way to a healthier pet. Generally, a pet is scrubbed and rinsed in warm water. A flea dip is applied and worked in with warm water and the pet is dried. A flea dip treats ticks and is an excellent way to begin treatment. Other preventative measures like a flea collar or topical tick medications will help in continued treatment.

What is a Medicated Bath? And How Do They Work?
Medicated baths for pets treat other skin irritations. A common condition is seborrhea, an oily irritation and redness, which is very responsive to medicated baths. Many skin problems are spring boards to more serious problems such as hypothyroidism, so scheduling a medicated bath at your local animal clinic for your pet is important preventative care.

Grooming is essential in your pet’s care, and can often be overlooked by even the most meticulous pet owners. With regular flea dips and medicated baths, you can take the first step towards a proper grooming plan for your pet – ensuring a happy, healthy pet in no time.

However, you must understand that there are flea baths that may work for others but may not work for your dog and its current flea problem. I found a great article discussing the concepts of flea baths, and I do believe you should read it too: http://dogsaholic.com/care/flea-bath-for-dogs.html
